Wines of Madeira

Madeira is a historic fortified wine from the Portuguese island of Madeira, famous for surviving long sea voyages better than almost any other wine. Producers discovered that heat and oxygen, normally enemies of wine, could actually create its signature flavors of caramel, nuts, citrus peel, spice, and dried fruit. It became hugely important in Atlantic trade and was especially popular in early America, where it was served at major political and social events. Madeira is still one of the wine world’s great curiosities: incredibly long-lived, deeply historical, and unlike almost anything else you can drink.
