Malbec
Malbec is a dark-skinned red grape best known today as the signature variety of Argentina, especially Mendoza. It typically produces deeply colored, medium- to full-bodied wines with flavors of blackberry, plum, violet, cocoa, and spice. Malbec usually has softer tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon, but enough structure to make rich, age-worthy wines. The grape originated in France, where it remains important in Cahors and historically played a role in Bordeaux blends. In Argentina’s high-elevation vineyards, abundant sunshine and cool nights help Malbec develop ripe fruit while retaining freshness and acidity.
